Area residents appreciate Dryer Vent Wizard

Area residents appreciate the Wizard for providing tips and information to avoid appliance disasters leading to serious property damage

Regular dryer vent cleaning service will prevent dryer fires and improve dryer performance. According to Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard, most dryer fires are the result of failure to clean dryer vents. “Lint build-up in the dryer duct restricts air flow and prevents heat and moisture from escaping,” said Lavalle. “If left unchecked the dryer can overheat and cause a fire.”

Dryer Vent Wizard is a national franchise company specializing in dryer vent services while educating their customers about dryer fire prevention and energy savings. Making clothes dryers safer and greener is the Wizard’s passion.

Note from customer: “Michael Lavalle (son of owner Dave Lavalle) was very helpful, friendly, and calm. Happy to recommend him and the work he did." Tolland Ln. Charlotte, NC 28277

Dave’s customers are often amazed to learn how important dryer vent cleaning service is. Note from customer: “Dryer was amazing after venting was replaced - thank you! Also thanks for spending the time w/ me + discussing future plans - impacted amount of venting!"

Though dryer vents are their major focus, the Dryer Vent Wizard will also replace standard washing machine hoses with stainless steel hoses to prevent bursting. “Most people do not think about the constant pressure on their washing machine hoses,” said Lavalle. “If a water hose bursts the home could be completely flooded within minutes. Water valves to the washer should be turned off if residents are on vacation or away from home for an extended period of time.”

Dryer Vent Wizard is a member of the National Fire Protection Association and the largest chain of dryer vent cleaning, repair, replacement and alternation specialists in the U.S. with nearly 60 franchisees in major markets in the U.S.

Dryer Vent Wizard Addresses New Features in Dryers

Dryer duct cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires and promote dryer efficiency. Some dryer manufacturers have introduced models with a sensor to indicate if the dryer duct system is blocked. These new features can help enhance dryer performance, but manufacturers are not calling them safety features.

Dave Lavalle, franchise owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in Greater Charlotte was recently asked if these new features could enhance dryer safety. “Dryer duct cleaning is the only way to be completely safe. The new features are a step in the right direction, but don’t count on them! According to a study conducted by Consumer Reports the results were inconsistent. Sometimes the indicators worked, sometimes they did not.”

Consumer Reports says these indicators cannot be relied on to alert people to a blocked dryer duct. “Even the very best clothes dryer, with all the newest features, and a state-of-the-art dryer duct system, will require dryer duct cleaning periodically to enhance safety and efficiency,” said Gors. “There is no such thing as a maintenance free clothes dryer.”

A good clothes dryer can range from $500 – 1,200. Custom programming and automatic dry sensors do a great job in promoting dryer efficiency. Dave Lavalle advises his customers to have their dryer duct system inspected and cleaned annually to keep their clothes dryers running safely and efficiently. “It is not necessary to buy the most expensive model,” said Lavalle. “The most important part of a clothes dryer’s function is the dryer duct and vent. Without a proper dryer vent system, even the very best dryer will not operate efficiently.”

Dryer Vent Wizard is a nationwide dryer vent service provider making clothes dryers in America safer and greener.

Dryer Fire

Friday, June 24, 2011 2:16 pm
Jule Hubbard |
A one-story brick and wood frame home in the Ridgecrest subdivision less than a mile from the Wilkesboro town limits was gutted by fire Thursday morning.
Shandra Haynes said in an interview that she found the basement of the three-bedroom home on Ridgecrest Street filled with smoke a little after 6:45 a.m. Thursday when she tried to check on clothes in a dryer in the basement laundry room before going to work.
Ms. Haynes said she turned the dryer on about 15 minutes earlier. She dialed 911 to report the fire to the Wilkes Communications Center and went to the bedroom of her mother, Gail Haynes, to awaken her.
Wilkes Fire Investigator Niki Hamby of the Wilkes Sheriff’s Department said everything indicated that the fire started in the dryer.
Gail Haynes said she didn’t have homeowner’s insurance and has been unemployed since her job for a company on contractor basis was terminated in March. Mrs. Haynes said she and her daughter weren’t able to get their dog and cat out of the burning house and that she believed they died in the fire.
She also said the smoke alarm in the house didn’t go off, apparently because it needed a new battery. She wasn’t the original resident but has lived in the home about 34 years.
Mrs. Haynes and her daughter stood in their yard as firefighters and fire trucks arrived and then went to the porch of their neighbor, Judy Anderson, who stayed with them.
Millers Creek Fire Department firefighters, dispatched at 6:51 a.m. Thursday, found heavy smoke pouring out of basement and ground floor windows and flames in the laundry room when they arrived, said Millers Creek Division Chief Robbie Bolin.
Bolin said the Cricket, Champion, Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro, Goshen, Wilbar and Mulberry fire departments were also dispatched and arrived with additional water and manpower.
The fire burned upward along walls in the eastern end of the house, which included the laundry room, but was under control after about an hour of firefighting, he said.
The home was full of various items and this helped fuel the fire, Bolin added. “It got away from us after the initial attack but we got it back under control.”
Firefighters kept flames from reaching the kitchen, living room and other areas of the western end of the house.
“I have to give our guys credit because they kept it out of the other (western) end of the house,” he said, referring to flames not reaching the area that included the kitchen and living room. Bolin said the western end of the house still had smoke and heat damage.
Because it wasn’t safe for firefighters to walk on a portion of the first floor above about six floor joists badly damaged by flames, said Bolin, the Wilkesboro Fire Department’s aerial fire truck was used to douse areas still smoldering.
Millers Creek Fire Chief Jason Smithey said a fire hydrant within view of the Haynes home wasn’t used Thursday morning because Millers Creek firefighters determined hydrants in Ridgecrest had a water pressure problem when they checked them a few months ago.
With a 2,500-gallon Millers Creek tanker and four tankers from other departments quickly on the scene, he said, firefighters had the water they needed. Some of the tankers were refilled with water from a Wilkesboro hydrant along nearby U.S. 421 with more capacity than the Ridgecrest hydrants.
Smithey said the West Wilkes Water Association is working well with his department to address the hydrant problem, which he said apparently involved a valve not opening correctly. All but one Ridgecrest hydrant, one being checked as the issue is addressed, are temporarily covered in plastic.
Smithey emphasized that not using the hydrants didn’t hamper firefighting efforts since firefighters knew in advance to compensate for this by having additional fire departments dispatched.
“We called for Wilkesboro before we even got there,” he said. “And we quickly had other departments coming.”
Firefighting efforts are hampered if firefighters don’t find out about a problem with a hydrant until after a hose is attached to it, he said. “That’s the main reason we test hydrants,” said Smithey, adding the N.C. Department of Insurance requires that each hydrant be tested at least once a year.
He said Millers Creek and some other departments test hydrants twice a year because it lowers homeowner’s insurance premiums.
Smithey said he also realized that testing hydrants could be inconvenient for citizens.
The Wilkes-Alleghany chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist Mrs. Haynes and her daughter.
The Wilkes Rescue Squad and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services were both on the scene but there were no injuries reported.
Wilkesboro Town Planner Andrew Carlton said the Wilkesboro town limits only extend to the highway right of way for U.S. 421 where Ridgecrest Street intersects with U.S. 421. He said Ridgecrest is in the town’s extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction.

Leaky Dryer Vents Cause Mold and Health Issues

Charlotte's Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard works to educate area residents providing great incentives to maintain their dryer vent system. As with any appliance, there are several things that can go mechanically wrong with a clothes dryer. Proper maintenance has been the solution and prevention of dryer hazards and performance problems. Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard shows his customers how they can save money on utilities while prolonging the life of their clothes dryer and preventing dryer fires with simple routine maintenance.

Dave explains, “It is not normal for an older dryer to take several cycles to properly dry a load of clothes. Many people think this is the case when their dryers are not working as well as they did when they were new. They think that as long as the lint screen is free of lint, the inefficiency must be due to the age of the dryer.”

The Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard quickly addresses this myth as he explains, “Air-flow is the most important requirement for a dryer to operate safely and efficiently. Lint accumulation in the dryer vent system restricts air-flow, causing the dryer to labor harder while doing its job less efficiently. When left unchecked, this will eventually lead to a dryer fire.”

According to Lavalle, "cleaning dryer vents is the most important maintenance required by the dryer. Most dryer performance problems are directly related to the quality and efficiency of the dryer vent system".

Mooresville Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard says that dryer vent cleaning is one of the most beneficial of all home services. All appliances require proper maintenance to improve efficiency and performance and sometimes for safety reasons as well.

Dryer vent cleaning is the number one way to eliminate a fire hazard while improving dryer performance and efficiency. Poorly vented clothes dryers can cost and additional $300 per year to operate. Clogged dryer vent systems can allow the heat and moisture from laundry to escape into the home, causing the AC to over work as the room becomes very hot and humid. Poor air flow causes the dryer to take additional cycles to dry each load.

Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard of Mooresville specializes in dryer vent installation and dryer vent cleaning service. In addition to the above mentioned benefits of dryer vent cleaning, Lavalle mentioned another hazard that few people are aware of. By law, all gas dryers must be vented to the outdoors, said Brusseau. Most people realize that their gas furnace can be a carbon monoxide hazard; however, few think about this in relation to a clothes dryer.

Dave Lavalle and his son Michael enjoy building relationships with customers as they educates them on the importance of dryer vent cleaning and proper dryer vent installation. I've seen many dryers that are vented into a crawl space or attic, said Lavalle. These customers appreciate it when we point out the mold growing in the crawl space or attic as a result of an improperly installed dryer vent system. Mold and mildew can cause serious damage to homes and illness for residents.

Services by the Mooresville Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard provide peace of mind that the dryer vent system is safe and free from fire hazard. Dryer Vent Wizard provides dryer vent inspections, cleaning, repairs, replacement and alterations to make dryer vents safer and greener.

Huntersville, NC Dryer Vent Cleaning is the greenest tip the Wizard has for consumers with clothes dryers. Clothes dryers are one of the most expensive appliances to operate and they are in over 80 percent of American homes. Poorly vented clothes dryers cost substantially more to operate. Few people are aware the importance of proper maintenance to prevent fires and reduce energy costs.

Green technology is a sign of the times and consumers are becoming more aware of the need to conserve energy and protect our planet. Dryer vent cleaning technician, Dave Lavalle, encourages his customers to maintain their dryer vent system to improve airflow and promote maximum dryer efficiency. Another green tip the Wizard encourages is line drying some laundry. Solar drying is free, said Lavalle, If everyone line-dried just one load a week, the energy savings would be significant.

Dryer Vent Wizard franchises are locally owned and operated in over 50 major market areas in the U.S. Dryer Vent Wizard only services dryer vent systems, so they are the experts in their industry. So why would a Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard suggest line drying? Because we encourage our customers to be fire safe and energy efficient, said Lavalle. We are not worried that people will give up their clothes dryer. The clothes dryer is a wonderful convenience that reduces the work load, but it comes with a cost. It is the most likely appliance to start a fire and it is one of the most expensive to operate.

Dave Lavalle does not expect everyone to go back in time and do things the old fashioned way, but he is not against taking steps to save energy. Hanging clothes out until they are almost dry, and then finishing in the dryer will reduce the amount of lint that is produced, said Lavalle.

Dave Lavalle serves homes and businesses, pet salons and animal shelters, nursing homes and apartment buildings in the Greater Charlotte area. Poorly maintained dryer vents are fire hazards and cause clothes dryers to cost substantially more to operate.

Clothes dryer sparks east Charlotte fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A fire on Triece Lane in east Charlotte forced four people out of a home this weekend.
Firefighters were called to the home Saturday morning.
Investigators say the fire started because too much lint built up in the clothes dryer. The fire caused about $10,000 in damage.
The Red Cross is helping the four people who lived there find temporary housing.

Gaston Family Homeless After Dryer Fire

A double-wide mobile home fire that began in a clothes dryer Monday afternoon left a Kings Mountain family of five homeless and destitute.

The home at 109 Meagon Drive caught fire again early Wednesday and finished burning.

John “J.D.” Page, 39, and his common-law wife, Amy Welch, 41, have lived there for three years with their children: Emilie, 19; Stormie, 13; and Gracie, 6.

Welch said the American Red Cross paid for a couple of nights’ lodging at a Super 8 motel in Shelby and the three girls are temporarily living with relatives.

The family has lost all material possessions and have nothing but their Dodge pickup truck and the clothes on their backs, Page said.

Welch said she and 6-year-old Gracie were at home when the fire started at 3:45 p.m. Monday.

“I opened up the door and it (dryer) was in flames. It kept spreading and there was nothing I could do,” Welch said.

Just before waking up Wednesday morning at the motel, Welch’s cell phone rang and it was their neighbors in Kings Mountain telling them the mobile home was on fire again.

“It started up about 6 a.m. and burnt the whole thing down,” she said. “Only two rooms were saved (after Monday’s fire), my kids’ bedrooms. There’s absolutely nothing salvageable.”

Page said apparently a small, smoldering flame contained to insulation in the ceiling didn’t catch fire until early Wednesday.

Gracie attends Washington Elementary School, Stormie attends Burns Middle, and Emilie goes to Burns High.

“They’ve missed school. John and I took the rest of the week off work and we’ve got so much to figure out,” Welch said.

Two dogs, a pickup and a prayer

Page said he doesn’t have money to rent a home or apartment because his family has been living paycheck to paycheck, paying their bills each week. Since Monday, they’ve been either at the Super 8 motel or in the truck with their two small dogs, Baby and Rocky.

Page said he works at Shelby Paving and Asphalt Co. and Welch works part-time at Party City in Gastonia.

“All I’ve got is this truck, eight dollars in my pocket and a quarter tank of gas,” Page said.

The truck had a flat tire on Wednesday afternoon, leaving Page to wonder what’s going to happen to them next. They were able to get the tire repaired and Page said he’s caught between a rock and a hard place because he can’t afford to miss work but needs to find a place for his family to bed down.

“With all this, we’ll both be missing work for a week or two. Right now, I’m trying to figure out where I’m going to lay my head and my kids’ heads,” he said. “I feel like I’m in a daze. I really don’t know who to turn to.”

Page said he doesn’t know if the mobile home is insured or not.

“I lost my mom two years ago, so I inherited the house,” he said. “This house and everything in it was all I had left of my mom.”

Turning to God in the midst of tragedy has served as a source of strength for Page, but he can’t ignore his family’s material needs that seem to be pressing.

“I still turn to the man upstairs,” he said. “Everything’s gone, everything … all their school clothes, spring clothes, beds. Most of all, we thank God. All that stuff can be replaced.”

Kind-hearted folks

Lisa Featherston of Gastonia is good friends with Page and Welch. She described them as good people who work hard to provide for their children. “J.D. has got about the biggest heart I could think of. I’ve been friends with him 26 years,” she said. “He’s just a great family guy. He loves his children to pieces and will do just about anything to put food on the table.”

Featherston said she feels for Page and Welch’s family because they are good people thrust into a bad situation.

“Financially, they struggle in general. I don’t know what they’re going to do,” she said. “They literally lost everything. He (Page) is not educated and that has been a little bit of a downfall when it comes to getting a good-paying job.”

The Oak Grove, Waco, Cleveland and Tryonota volunteer fire departments were at the scene Wednesday. Firefighters from Gaston County were also called to assist.

Anyone who may wish to help the family can reach Welch at 704-271-0051.

Gazette reporter Wade Allen can be reached at 704-869-1828.

Greater Charlotte, NC Dryer vent cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires and increase dryer performance. Dryer vent cleaning will significantly reduce energy costs and help to prevent pre-mature appliance breakdown. Over 17,000 dryer related fires are reported annually with failure to clean dryer vents being the number one cause.

Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in the Charlotte area is making a big difference in his community by educating his customers about dryer fire prevention and energy savings. Dave receives great reviews from happy customers who have noticed their clothes dryers working more efficiently after his service. Please see our survey cards: http://www.charlottedryerventlady.com/referral.htm

Dave advises his customers to have their dryer vent system inspected to make sure it meets current safety standards. Dryer vent systems made of vinyl or flexible foil should be replaced with solid metal venting. The lint screen should be cleaned after every load and professional dryer vent cleaning service should be performed every 2 to 4 years. I enjoy building long-lasting relationships with my customers and they appreciate my concern for their safety, said Lavalle.

Dave makes sure his customers understand the warning signs to watch for, including clothes taking more than one cycle to dry, no visible lint on the lint screen, dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle, clothing having a moldy smell after a dry cycle, and clothing being very hot after a dry cycle. Too many people believe their dryer is taking longer due to age and wear, said Dave. This is the most commonly noticed sign of lint accumulation in the dryer vent system and it indicates a serious fire hazard.

The Dryer Vent Cleaning Charlotte Wizard specializes in professional dryer vent installation, dryer vent cleaning and urgent response dryer vent service for homeowners and business owners in the Charlotte, NC area. Dryer Vent Wizard has nearly 60 franchise locations in the U.S.

Hickory, NC dryer fire

April 01, 2011: Charlotte, NC -- Dryer vent cleaning is important for a number of reasons. Dryer vent cleaning enhances dryer performance, extends the life of the appliance and helps save energy. Most importantly, dryer vent cleaning eliminates a potential fire hazard that could be lurking in nearly 80 percent of American homes today.

Hickory, NC A dryer fire caused $60,000 in damage as it spread rapidly throughout the home. An additional truck and crew were called in to help and one occupant was taken to the hospital for observation.

Howards Creek, NC Firefighters were called to a mobile home when it filled with smoke. The fire was in the back of the home and under the home, and it started in the clogged dryer vent.

Over 17,000 dryer fires occur annually, causing deaths, injuries and loss of homes. Dryer fires are especially devastating in apartment buildings and attached condos where more homes and lives can be at risk.
