Dryer Vent Wizard Addresses New Features in Dryers

Dryer duct cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires and promote dryer efficiency. Some dryer manufacturers have introduced models with a sensor to indicate if the dryer duct system is blocked. Consumer Reports says these indicators cannot be relied on to alert people to a blocked dryer duct. “Even the very best clothes dryer, with all the newest features, and a state-of-the-art dryer duct system, will require dryer duct cleaning periodically to enhance safety and efficiency,” said Gors. “There is no such thing as a maintenance free clothes dryer.”

A good clothes dryer can range from $500 – 1,200. Custom programming and automatic dry sensors do a great job in promoting dryer efficiency. A one-story brick and wood frame home in the Ridgecrest subdivision less than a mile from the Wilkesboro town limits was gutted by fire Thursday morning.
Shandra Haynes said in an interview that she found the basement of the three-bedroom home on Ridgecrest Street filled with smoke a little after 6:45 a.m. Thursday when she tried to check on clothes in a dryer in the basement laundry room before going to work.
Ms. Haynes said she turned the dryer on about 15 minutes earlier. She dialed 911 to report the fire to the Wilkes Communications Center and went to the bedroom of her mother, Gail Haynes, to awaken her.
Wilkes Fire Investigator Niki Hamby of the Wilkes Sheriff’s Department said everything indicated that the fire started in the dryer.
Gail Haynes said she didn’t have homeowner’s insurance and has been unemployed since her job for a company on contractor basis was terminated in March. Mrs. Haynes said she and her daughter weren’t able to get their dog and cat out of the burning house and that she believed they died in the fire.
She also said the smoke alarm in the house didn’t go off, apparently because it needed a new battery. She wasn’t the original resident but has lived in the home about 34 years.
Mrs. Haynes and her daughter stood in their yard as firefighters and fire trucks arrived and then went to the porch of their neighbor, Judy Anderson, who stayed with them.
Millers Creek Fire Department firefighters, dispatched at 6:51 a.m. Thursday, found heavy smoke pouring out of basement and ground floor windows and flames in the laundry room when they arrived, said Millers Creek Division Chief Robbie Bolin.
Bolin said the Cricket, Champion, Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro, Goshen, Wilbar and Mulberry fire departments were also dispatched and arrived with additional water and manpower.
The fire burned upward along walls in the eastern end of the house, which included the laundry room, but was under control after about an hour of firefighting, he said.
The home was full of various items and this helped fuel the fire, Bolin added. “It got away from us after the initial attack but we got it back under control.”
Firefighters kept flames from reaching the kitchen, living room and other areas of the western end of the house.
“I have to give our guys credit because they kept it out of the other (western) end of the house,” he said, referring to flames not reaching the area that included the kitchen and living room. Bolin said the western end of the house still had smoke and heat damage.
Because it wasn’t safe for firefighters to walk on a portion of the first floor above about six floor joists badly damaged by flames, said Bolin, the Wilkesboro Fire Department’s aerial fire truck was used to douse areas still smoldering.
Millers Creek Fire Chief Jason Smithey said a fire hydrant within view of the Haynes home wasn’t used Thursday morning because Millers Creek firefighters determined hydrants in Ridgecrest had a water pressure problem when they checked them a few months ago.
With a 2,500-gallon Millers Creek tanker and four tankers from other departments quickly on the scene, he said, firefighters had the water they needed. Some of the tankers were refilled with water from a Wilkesboro hydrant along nearby U.S. 421 with more capacity than the Ridgecrest hydrants.
Smithey said the West Wilkes Water Association is working well with his department to address the hydrant problem, which he said apparently involved a valve not opening correctly. All but one Ridgecrest hydrant, one being checked as the issue is addressed, are temporarily covered in plastic.
Smithey emphasized that not using the hydrants didn’t hamper firefighting efforts since firefighters knew in advance to compensate for this by having additional fire departments dispatched.
“We called for Wilkesboro before we even got there,” he said. “And we quickly had other departments coming.”
Firefighting efforts are hampered if firefighters don’t find out about a problem with a hydrant until after a hose is attached to it, he said. “That’s the main reason we test hydrants,” said Smithey, adding the N.C. Department of Insurance requires that each hydrant be tested at least once a year.
He said Millers Creek and some other departments test hydrants twice a year because it lowers homeowner’s insurance premiums.
Smithey said he also realized that testing hydrants could be inconvenient for citizens.
The Wilkes-Alleghany chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist Mrs. Haynes and her daughter.
The Wilkes Rescue Squad and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services were both on the scene but there were no injuries reported.
Wilkesboro Town Planner Andrew Carlton said the Wilkesboro town limits only extend to the highway right of way for U.S. 421 where Ridgecrest Street intersects with U.S. 421. He said Ridgecrest is in the town’s extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction.

Clothes dryer sparks east Charlotte fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A fire on Triece Lane in east Charlotte forced four people out of a home this weekend.
Firefighters were called to the home Saturday morning.
Investigators say the fire started because too much lint built up in the clothes dryer. The fire caused about $10,000 in damage.
The Red Cross is helping the four people who lived there find temporary housing.

Gaston Family Homeless After Dryer Fire

A double-wide mobile home fire that began in a clothes dryer Monday afternoon left a Kings Mountain family of five homeless and destitute.

The home at 109 Meagon Drive caught fire again early Wednesday and finished burning.

John “J.D.” Page, 39, and his common-law wife, Amy Welch, 41, have lived there for three years with their children: Emilie, 19; Stormie, 13; and Gracie, 6.

Welch said the American Red Cross paid for a couple of nights’ lodging at a Super 8 motel in Shelby and the three girls are temporarily living with relatives.

The family has lost all material possessions and have nothing but their Dodge pickup truck and the clothes on their backs, Page said.

Welch said she and 6-year-old Gracie were at home when the fire started at 3:45 p.m. Monday.

“I opened up the door and it (dryer) was in flames. It kept spreading and there was nothing I could do,” Welch said.

Just before waking up Wednesday morning at the motel, Welch’s cell phone rang and it was their neighbors in Kings Mountain telling them the mobile home was on fire again.

“It started up about 6 a.m. and burnt the whole thing down,” she said. “Only two rooms were saved (after Monday’s fire), my kids’ bedrooms. There’s absolutely nothing salvageable.”

Page said apparently a small, smoldering flame contained to insulation in the ceiling didn’t catch fire until early Wednesday.

Gracie attends Washington Elementary School, Stormie attends Burns Middle, and Emilie goes to Burns High.

“They’ve missed school. John and I took the rest of the week off work and we’ve got so much to figure out,” Welch said.



Two dogs, a pickup and a prayer

Page said he doesn’t have money to rent a home or apartment because his family has been living paycheck to paycheck, paying their bills each week. Since Monday, they’ve been either at the Super 8 motel or in the truck with their two small dogs, Baby and Rocky.

Page said he works at Shelby Paving and Asphalt Co. and Welch works part-time at Party City in Gastonia.

“All I’ve got is this truck, eight dollars in my pocket and a quarter tank of gas,” Page said.

The truck had a flat tire on Wednesday afternoon, leaving Page to wonder what’s going to happen to them next. They were able to get the tire repaired and Page said he’s caught between a rock and a hard place because he can’t afford to miss work but needs to find a place for his family to bed down.

“With all this, we’ll both be missing work for a week or two. Right now, I’m trying to figure out where I’m going to lay my head and my kids’ heads,” he said. “I feel like I’m in a daze. I really don’t know who to turn to.”

Page said he doesn’t know if the mobile home is insured or not.

“I lost my mom two years ago, so I inherited the house,” he said. “This house and everything in it was all I had left of my mom.”

Turning to God in the midst of tragedy has served as a source of strength for Page, but he can’t ignore his family’s material needs that seem to be pressing.

“I still turn to the man upstairs,” he said. “Everything’s gone, everything … all their school clothes, spring clothes, beds. Most of all, we thank God. All that stuff can be replaced.”



Kind-hearted folks

Lisa Featherston of Gastonia is good friends with Page and Welch. She described them as good people who work hard to provide for their children. “J.D. has got about the biggest heart I could think of. I’ve been friends with him 26 years,” she said. “He’s just a great family guy. He loves his children to pieces and will do just about anything to put food on the table.”

Featherston said she feels for Page and Welch’s family because they are good people thrust into a bad situation.

“Financially, they struggle in general. I don’t know what they’re going to do,” she said. “They literally lost everything. He (Page) is not educated and that has been a little bit of a downfall when it comes to getting a good-paying job.”

The Oak Grove, Waco, Cleveland and Tryonota volunteer fire departments were at the scene Wednesday. Firefighters from Gaston County were also called to assist.

Eggs in time for Easter!

Professional dryer vent installation is just as important as annual dryer vent cleaning, even in newer homes. Many consumers believe their newer home is likely to contain fewer if any fire hazards. Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in Charlotte; recently a DVW tech inspected a dryer vent system in a newer home. The homeowner was confident that everything would be correct and up to code because the home was less than one year old.

The tech looked behind the clothes dryer and he was happy to find that the proper material was used for the dryer ducts; solid metal instead of corrugated plastic or vinyl. The pieces were joined with metal tape rather than screws that protrude into the inside of the ducts to catch and trap lint.

The tech also followed the duct to see where it ends; he was disappointed to find that it went right into the attic. “There was a pile of lint in the attic and I could see that mold and mildew was growing on the rafters,” said the tech. “Mold will eventually cause the rafters to rot. Mold spores in the home can cause upper respiratory problems for residents. By law, the dryer must be vented outdoors. If you have a gas dryer, you are also risking carbon monoxide in your home” said Lavalle.

The best dryer exhaust system is made of solid metal, smooth inside, joined with metal tape and is as short and straight as possible. Lavalle explained, “The longer your dryer exhaust pipe is, the more resistance there is to air-flow. Bends and turns also cause resistance. Portsmouth, NH: A dryer fire caused heavy smoke damage to contents in the basement of a home while the resident was upstairs. She smelled the smoke but thought it was a neighbor having a BBQ. Minutes later, a neighbor knocked at her door to tell her that smoke was coming from her dryer vent. Thanks to an alert neighbor and the quick response from the fire department, damages were minimal and there were no injuries.
The above stories could have ended much worse than they did. Charlotte, NC —October is National Fire Prevention Month. Dryer Vent Wizard is joining the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) in fire prevention awareness efforts by providing tips for preventing dryer fires.

“We found that there is still a huge lack of awareness among consumers who think it’s normal for their dryer to take two to three cycles to dry one load of clothing. They typically don’t realize that this is a warning sign of a dryer vent clog and fire hazard. Unfortunately one such incident resulted in the tragic death of a mother in Massachusetts,” says Dave Lavalle, formally of Massachusetts. “That unfortunate situation haunts me because I drove by the street where this dryer fire happened weekly with my dryer vent cleaning equipment in tow.” Dryer Vent Wizard is a nationwide chain of 55 dryer vent cleaning, repair, replacement and alteration specialists in the U.S.
