Dryer duct cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires and promote dryer efficiency. Some dryer manufacturers have introduced models with a sensor to indicate if the dryer duct system is blocked. These new features can help enhance dryer performance, but manufacturers are not calling them safety features.

The new features are a step in the right direction, but don’t count on them! According to a study conducted by Consumer Reports the results were inconsistent. Sometimes the indicators worked, sometimes they did not.”

Consumer Reports says these indicators cannot be relied on to alert people to a blocked dryer duct. “Even the very best clothes dryer, with all the newest features, and a state-of-the-art dryer duct system, will require dryer duct cleaning periodically to enhance safety and efficiency,” said Gors. “There is no such thing as a maintenance free clothes dryer.”

A one-story brick and wood frame home in the Ridgecrest subdivision less than a mile from the Wilkesboro town limits was gutted by fire Thursday morning.
Shandra Haynes said in an interview that she found the basement of the three-bedroom home on Ridgecrest Street filled with smoke a little after 6:45 a.m. Thursday when she tried to check on clothes in a dryer in the basement laundry room before going to work.
Ms. Haynes said she turned the dryer on about 15 minutes earlier. She dialed 911 to report the fire to the Wilkes Communications Center and went to the bedroom of her mother, Gail Haynes, to awaken her.
Wilkes Fire Investigator Niki Hamby of the Wilkes Sheriff’s Department said everything indicated that the fire started in the dryer.
Gail Haynes said she didn’t have homeowner’s insurance and has been unemployed since her job for a company on contractor basis was terminated in March. Mrs. Haynes said she and her daughter weren’t able to get their dog and cat out of the burning house and that she believed they died in the fire.
She also said the smoke alarm in the house didn’t go off, apparently because it needed a new battery. She wasn’t the original resident but has lived in the home about 34 years.
Mrs. Haynes and her daughter stood in their yard as firefighters and fire trucks arrived and then went to the porch of their neighbor, Judy Anderson, who stayed with them.
Millers Creek Fire Department firefighters, dispatched at 6:51 a.m. Thursday, found heavy smoke pouring out of basement and ground floor windows and flames in the laundry room when they arrived, said Millers Creek Division Chief Robbie Bolin.
Bolin said the Cricket, Champion, Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro, Goshen, Wilbar and Mulberry fire departments were also dispatched and arrived with additional water and manpower.
The fire burned upward along walls in the eastern end of the house, which included the laundry room, but was under control after about an hour of firefighting, he said.
The home was full of various items and this helped fuel the fire, Bolin added. “It got away from us after the initial attack but we got it back under control.”
Firefighters kept flames from reaching the kitchen, living room and other areas of the western end of the house.
“I have to give our guys credit because they kept it out of the other (western) end of the house,” he said, referring to flames not reaching the area that included the kitchen and living room. Bolin said the western end of the house still had smoke and heat damage.
Because it wasn’t safe for firefighters to walk on a portion of the first floor above about six floor joists badly damaged by flames, said Bolin, the Wilkesboro Fire Department’s aerial fire truck was used to douse areas still smoldering.
Millers Creek Fire Chief Jason Smithey said a fire hydrant within view of the Haynes home wasn’t used Thursday morning because Millers Creek firefighters determined hydrants in Ridgecrest had a water pressure problem when they checked them a few months ago.
With a 2,500-gallon Millers Creek tanker and four tankers from other departments quickly on the scene, he said, firefighters had the water they needed. Some of the tankers were refilled with water from a Wilkesboro hydrant along nearby U.S. 421 with more capacity than the Ridgecrest hydrants.
Smithey said the West Wilkes Water Association is working well with his department to address the hydrant problem, which he said apparently involved a valve not opening correctly. All but one Ridgecrest hydrant, one being checked as the issue is addressed, are temporarily covered in plastic.
Smithey emphasized that not using the hydrants didn’t hamper firefighting efforts since firefighters knew in advance to compensate for this by having additional fire departments dispatched.
“We called for Wilkesboro before we even got there,” he said. “And we quickly had other departments coming.”
Firefighting efforts are hampered if firefighters don’t find out about a problem with a hydrant until after a hose is attached to it, he said. “That’s the main reason we test hydrants,” said Smithey, adding the N.C. Department of Insurance requires that each hydrant be tested at least once a year.
He said Millers Creek and some other departments test hydrants twice a year because it lowers homeowner’s insurance premiums.
Smithey said he also realized that testing hydrants could be inconvenient for citizens.
The Wilkes-Alleghany chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist Mrs. Haynes and her daughter.
The Wilkes Rescue Squad and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services were both on the scene but there were no injuries reported.
Wilkesboro Town Planner Andrew Carlton said the Wilkesboro town limits only extend to the highway right of way for U.S. 421 where Ridgecrest Street intersects with U.S. 421. He said Ridgecrest is in the town’s extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction.

Clothes dryer sparks east Charlotte fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A fire on Triece Lane in east Charlotte forced four people out of a home this weekend.
Firefighters were called to the home Saturday morning.
Investigators say the fire started because too much lint built up in the clothes dryer. The fire caused about $10,000 in damage.
The Red Cross is helping the four people who lived there find temporary housing.

Gaston Family Homeless After Dryer Fire

A double-wide mobile home fire that began in a clothes dryer Monday afternoon left a Kings Mountain family of five homeless and destitute.

The home at 109 Meagon Drive caught fire again early Wednesday and finished burning.

John “J.D.” Page, 39, and his common-law wife, Amy Welch, 41, have lived there for three years with their children: Emilie, 19; Stormie, 13; and Gracie, 6.

Welch said the American Red Cross paid for a couple of nights’ lodging at a Super 8 motel in Shelby and the three girls are temporarily living with relatives.

The family has lost all material possessions and have nothing but their Dodge pickup truck and the clothes on their backs, Page said.

Welch said she and 6-year-old Gracie were at home when the fire started at 3:45 p.m. Monday.

“I opened up the door and it (dryer) was in flames. It kept spreading and there was nothing I could do,” Welch said.

Just before waking up Wednesday morning at the motel, Welch’s cell phone rang and it was their neighbors in Kings Mountain telling them the mobile home was on fire again.

“It started up about 6 a.m. and burnt the whole thing down,” she said. “Only two rooms were saved (after Monday’s fire), my kids’ bedrooms. There’s absolutely nothing salvageable.”

Page said apparently a small, smoldering flame contained to insulation in the ceiling didn’t catch fire until early Wednesday.

Gracie attends Washington Elementary School, Stormie attends Burns Middle, and Emilie goes to Burns High.

“They’ve missed school. John and I took the rest of the week off work and we’ve got so much to figure out,” Welch said.

Two dogs, a pickup and a prayer

Page said he doesn’t have money to rent a home or apartment because his family has been living paycheck to paycheck, paying their bills each week. Since Monday, they’ve been either at the Super 8 motel or in the truck with their two small dogs, Baby and Rocky.

Page said he works at Shelby Paving and Asphalt Co. and Welch works part-time at Party City in Gastonia.

“All I’ve got is this truck, eight dollars in my pocket and a quarter tank of gas,” Page said.

The truck had a flat tire on Wednesday afternoon, leaving Page to wonder what’s going to happen to them next. They were able to get the tire repaired and Page said he’s caught between a rock and a hard place because he can’t afford to miss work but needs to find a place for his family to bed down.

“With all this, we’ll both be missing work for a week or two. Right now, I’m trying to figure out where I’m going to lay my head and my kids’ heads,” he said. “I feel like I’m in a daze. I really don’t know who to turn to.”

Page said he doesn’t know if the mobile home is insured or not.

“I lost my mom two years ago, so I inherited the house,” he said. “This house and everything in it was all I had left of my mom.”

Turning to God in the midst of tragedy has served as a source of strength for Page, but he can’t ignore his family’s material needs that seem to be pressing.

“I still turn to the man upstairs,” he said. “Everything’s gone, everything … all their school clothes, spring clothes, beds. Most of all, we thank God. All that stuff can be replaced.”

Kind-hearted folks

Lisa Featherston of Gastonia is good friends with Page and Welch. She described them as good people who work hard to provide for their children. “J.D. has got about the biggest heart I could think of. I’ve been friends with him 26 years,” she said. “He’s just a great family guy. He loves his children to pieces and will do just about anything to put food on the table.”

Featherston said she feels for Page and Welch’s family because they are good people thrust into a bad situation.

“Financially, they struggle in general. I don’t know what they’re going to do,” she said. “They literally lost everything. He (Page) is not educated and that has been a little bit of a downfall when it comes to getting a good-paying job.”

The Oak Grove, Waco, Cleveland and Tryonota volunteer fire departments were at the scene Wednesday. Firefighters from Gaston County were also called to assist.

It was taking to long to dry their clothes. The dryer vent was filled with a birds nest and the birds broke through the vent into the attic as you can see by this picture.

Professional dryer vent installation is just as important as annual dryer vent cleaning, even in newer homes. Many consumers believe their newer home is likely to contain fewer if any fire hazards. Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in Charlotte; recently a DVW tech inspected a dryer vent system in a newer home. The homeowner was confident that everything would be correct and up to code because the home was less than one year old.

The tech looked behind the clothes dryer and he was happy to find that the proper material was used for the dryer ducts; solid metal instead of corrugated plastic or vinyl. The pieces were joined with metal tape rather than screws that protrude into the inside of the ducts to catch and trap lint.

The tech also followed the duct to see where it ends; he was disappointed to find that it went right into the attic. “There was a pile of lint in the attic and I could see that mold and mildew was growing on the rafters,” said the tech. “Mold will eventually cause the rafters to rot. Mold spores in the home can cause upper respiratory problems for residents. By law, the dryer must be vented outdoors. If you have a gas dryer, you are also risking carbon monoxide in your home” said Lavalle.

Portsmouth, NH: A dryer fire caused heavy smoke damage to contents in the basement of a home while the resident was upstairs. She smelled the smoke but thought it was a neighbor having a BBQ. Minutes later, a neighbor knocked at her door to tell her that smoke was coming from her dryer vent. Thanks to an alert neighbor and the quick response from the fire department, damages were minimal and there were no injuries.
The above stories could have ended much worse than they did. Proper Dryer Vent Installatin Prevents Dryer Fires and Extends Dryer Life

This picture demonstrates one of the poorest dryer vent installations I've seen in a long while. The vent was full of water and was a real fire hazard because the dryer could not ventilate.

Dryer vent installation Charlotte, NC: Dryer vent installation when done right helps to prevent dryer fires and extend dryer life. The lint filter must be cleaned after EVERY load to be safe. When the lint filter is clogged, air flow is completely blocked. When heat and moisture cannot escape the dryer drum, clothes will not dry properly, the dryer will overheat, and eventually break down or worse, cause a fire.

The lint filter catches about 60% of lint removed from laundry. The rest escapes into the back of the dryer and the dryer ducts. This is why dryer vent cleaning is required annually to keep dryers operating safely and efficiently.

So, are lint filters dangerous? Only if they are not cleaned after each load. Without the lint filter, all lint removed from laundry would end up in the dryer ducts. If it weren’t for the lint filter, dryer vent cleaning would be required after only a few loads of laundry!

Lint can get caught on screws used to join dryer duct work when it is incorrectly installed. Dryer duct sections should be joined with foil tape or clamps, not screws that protrude to the inside to catch and trap lint.

Gas dryers with clogged dryer vents can be a lethal combination. Carbon monoxide is a deadly byproduct of combustion that is common in all fuel burning appliances. Poorly vented gas dryers can allow dangerous levels of carbon monoxide into your home.

Lint is highly flammable, so it makes perfect tinder to fuel a fire. All it takes is spark from the inside of an over-worked clothes dryer to ignite the lint. Blockages also cause over-heating which will reduce the dryer’s life span with risk to wiring and motor damage.

So, why have a dryer vent system? Warm, moist air from the dryer will help reduce heating bills in the winter time, right?

WRONG! Dryer exhaust is more than just heat and moisture. Actually, it’s too much moisture which will lead to mold and mildew damage to your home as well as mold related illness to residents. Many people are very sensitive to mold. They may experience upper respiratory congestion or a full-blown asthma attack when exposed to high levels of mold.

As I said earlier, there is also a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning with gas dryers. And don’t forget the messy lint! Remember, only about 60% is caught in the lint trap; the rest will be flying around the basement, crawl space or attic, if your dryer is not vented outdoors.

Why not vent to the crawl space or attic? These areas are not living space. Besides the danger of carbon monoxide and mold related illness, excess moisture in the crawl space or attic will cause insulation or exposed wood to rot. Moisture is one of a home’s worst enemies, especially if it is trapped in a crawl space or attic.

Proper dryer vent installation allows heat and moisture to flow freely and clothes to dry properly. Increased drying time is a common indicator of a clogged dryer vent system. Some newer dryers have a warning light or sensor that indicates the need for dryer vent cleaning; however, these features are not to be taken for granted. They don’t always work. Dryer vent cleaning and proper dryer vent installation is the only way to be sure your dryer is working safely and efficiently.

Here are some common characteristics of improperly installed dryer vent systems:

Plastic or vinyl dryer ducts
Flexible foil dryer ducts
Very long dryer duct with many bends and turns
Dryer ducts that are not sloped properly to allow exhaust to flow out

The flexible type of dryer duct is very common because it is very easy to install; however, manufactures do not recommend them. Dryer ducts should be constructed of rigid metal and be smooth inside to help reduce lint build-up and promote maximum air flow.

The flexible, accordion-type ducts can be bent into any postion, but they are easily crushed or they will sag, allowing lint to build-up and air flow to be blocked.

Upgrading your Dryer Vent System

The ideal location for a dryer is on an outside wall with a direct, short dryer duct leading to the vent outdoors. In basements, a straight, vertical run reaching above the foundation to vent outdoors works. Long runs will lead to problems with air flow. 45 – 90 degree elbows create more resistance. Bends should be limited as length increases.

Ducts should be joined with clamps or foil tape instead of screws as explained earlier, to keep the inside of the dryer duct smooth. Do not use duct tape; it doesn’t withstand heat and it can be combustible.

The dryer vent outdoors should be at least 12 inches off the ground and 3 feet away from entrances to meet current safety standards. Check it often to be sure it is not blocked by bushes or plants. Be sure it is not damaged or cracked to allow birds, bugs and rodents to enter your home or set up housekeeping in this nice warm area.

Even if all of these rules are followed and you have the very best, state-of-the-art dryer vent system, dryer lint will eventually build up in the dryer ducts. Dryer vent cleaning is recommended at least once a year to keep dryers operating safely and efficiently.

Disaster averted at animal shelter

The recent tragedy that happened to the Berkeley East-Bay Humane Society is resonating throughout the animal shelter world. On May 20 the BEBHS suffered the loss of half their facility in a mid-night fire. Also lost were over a dozen cats that were up for adoption. The suspected origin of the fire was the shelter’s dryer.

Closing the shelter pending repairs and the need to evacuate the surviving animals is a shelter manager’s worst nightmare and the loss of life makes it especially emotional for the staff and volunteers who work there. Being a private, non-profit agency puts the burden of the bill squarely on the public in terms of needing donations in order to rebuild.

Coincidentally, earlier that week, one of our shelter dryers caught fire. But it was during the day when staff was there to quickly catch it and put it out. Chalking it up to an old machine, we ordered a new set and didn’t really think more about it. When this incident in Berkeley happened we changed our protocol about running the dryers after hours - it was our practice to throw one last load in to dry before we left for the night - and congratulated ourselves on having two fairly new dryers in good working order.

Little did we know that we had done nothing to address the bigger problem.

Right after news of the fire was released, we received a call from Rhonda Nole, owner of the Dryer Vent Wizard. A self-proclaimed animal lover, Rhonda was shaken by the disaster in Berkeley and wanted to make sure it wouldn’t happen in her county. She offered us a free inspection of our dryer vents so she could be assured our building was safe. I was very grateful but explained that we had two new units so it would be a waste of her time. She insisted and said there would be no charge if she could just come out to look. How could I refuse an offer like that!

When Rhonda came she immediately noticed our new dryer was running very hot (on the exterior - not normal) and there was water dripping from the exhaust vent. I’m sure that when we noticed it, we would have assumed there was an installation problem but she said that was not the issue. What she guessed had actually caused the initial fire was the fact the vent from the wall to the ceiling where the machine vented out of the building was blocked and without airflow the heat and moisture was backing up.

A climb up on the roof confirmed the fact that neither vent had any airflow at all. We were a disaster waiting to happen!

I thought we were doing what was needed by insisting the lint screens were cleaned after each load (with all the fur, dust, and litter at the shelter you can imagine how full they become) and having Public Works out on a regular basis to clean the machines and vents.

What I didn’t realize was they were only cleaning the vents from the machine to the wall. They didn’t have the equipment to clean the vents inside the walls to the ceiling. Apparently this hadn’t been done since the shelter was built about 15 years ago (even home machines should be professionally cleaned once a year). Not only does this keep the machines safe, but also, they run more efficiently. We were having to cycle loads through two and three times to get things dry. We had the Dryer Wizard do the necessary cleaning and they pulled almost nine pounds of packed lint out of about 13 feet of vent from our roof.

Whew - a local disaster averted and an important lesson learned. When was the last time your dryer vents were cleaned?

Firefighters had to rescue the black and white Staffordshire terrier, Daisy, who had poked her head into a hole which was to be used to install a dryer vent. It took 30 minutes for firefighters to remove some bricks from the outside of the property and then chisel away at the area of the wall surrounding the dog’s head to free her. Other than a few minor scratches to her face, she was unharmed; her vet checked her over and gave her a clean bill of health.

Even a brand new dryer will take longer to dry a load of laundry without sufficient air flow.

This happened recently and the customer agreed to let me check their dryer vent system. The first thing I noticed when I went into the basement was the flexible metal dryer exhaust duct which traveled up from the back of the dryer and then turned to head about 4 feet to the dryer vent outside. The 4 foot extension was installed at a slight decline. Can you guess what I found in this dryer vent?

I unscrewed the clamp and emptied about a gallon of lint, dust and water from the dryer duct. I explained to my customer that this is a very poorly installed dryer vent system. The decline allowed cold air to cause steam from the dryer to liquefy and become trapped in the pipe, already clogged with lint. The flexible duct material, sagging between the joists allowed the lint and water to pool in a low spot and block air flow from the dryer.

I take pride in my work and my relationship with my customers. I explained why the dryer vent system she had was not in compliance with current safety codes. I installed a new dryer vent system made of rigid metal, and strapped it to the joists properly so that it led to the dryer vent at a slight incline. The customer was very happy to have her dryer operating safely and efficiently. I promised to contact her every year for dryer vent cleaning service.

Appliance-rebate program restarts

The N.C. Energy Star appliance-rebate program will resume Tuesday. The program is designed to encourage consumers to buy energy-efficient products.
North Carolina received $8.8 million through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund the program.
During the program’s first phase, which ran April 22 to April 25, about $7 million was used for rebates on purchases of 54,400 appliances.
The unspent funds will be available in the second phase.
Consumers may go online at www.energync.net or call (877) 379-7323 to apply for the rebate.
Eligible appliances include central air conditioners, heat pumps, gas furnaces, water heaters, refrigerators and washing machines. Rebates range from $75 to $300.

Clogged dryer vent causes house fire in Mint Hill

MINT HILL, NC (WBTV) - A clogged dryer vent caused a fire at a home in eastern Mecklenburg County Tuesday morning.

The fire was at 6837 Silver Valley Drive near Piney Creek Court. Firefighters received the call around 9 a.m.

The fire scorched the vinyl siding near the side door and caused more than $25,000 in damage.
